Visa for Sri Lanka

How to request and obtain a Visa for Sri Lanka (ETA)

How to request and obtain a Visa for Sri Lanka

Some doubts may arise about how to apply for a tourist visa for Sri Lanka. To make things easier I decided to create a post that explains how to fill in the ETA for entry into Sri Lanka.
There are various ways to apply for a visa:

The methods I describe in this post are the last two, i.e. via a government website or via a website specialized in issuing visas in Italian.

What is ETA?

ETA is a official authorization to visit Sri Lanka for a limited period and is issued electronically by the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka. The ETA holder is authorized to enter Sri Lanka within three months from the date of issue of the ETA.

ETA holders will need to meet the following requirements when arriving at the entry point into Sri Lanka:

  • A passport valid beyond six months from the date of arrival in Sri Lanka
  • A confirmed return ticket

The ETA is initially limited to 30 days from the arrival date and can be extended up to six months.

METHOD 1 – Request the ETA from the Government website

First you have to go to the Government site.
The list of languages to choose from will appear on the home page. In this case as there is no Italian choose the one you prefer and understand best, I will choose the English language for this post.

After choosing the language, the pages with all the information on the ETA will appear. If you need more information go to the frequently asked questions menu, the so-called FAQ.

Now let’s proceed with the ETA request.
Click on the window APPLYthe terms and conditions for proceeding with the ETA Application will appear here.
Read and click on I Agree.

At this point we are asked what type of entry we must make into the country.

A list of options appears in the side menu on the left. In our case it is tourism and so we click on Apply for an individualbecause obviously it is our personal visa.

Step 1

Here we must enter our personal data. Name, surname, etc.
Don’t forget all the mandatory data with an asterisk *.

You will also find a section dedicated to children you may have in your passport, (Child information in relative’s…). If you don’t have kids, forget about this area and move on.

In the part Travel informationyou must enter the date of your arrival in Sri Lanka and above all the purpose of the visit, in this case mark with the acronym: Sightseeing or holidaying. You can also enter flight information and more, but this is not mandatory.
Once all the fields have been filled in, click on next and move on to step 2.

Step 2

Here you will find a summary of all the information on the previously filled out page.

Check and if you notice any errors, go back to make the necessary corrections. Otherwise, go ahead with the Confirm button to move on to the next step.
By clicking on confirm, another pop-up will appear telling you that all the data released must be truthful and verifiable and that if this were not the case there could be legal consequences, click ok and move on.

Step 3

In this area you can choose the payment method. The types recognized are the three classic circuits: Visa, Mastercard, American Express.

I advise you to be careful when using Poste Pay cards, as the embassy in Rome told me that there could be problems as they are not recognised. Personally it has never happened to me.

At this point select the payment method using your circuit’s logo. A classic screen for online payment will appear, fill in the fields and click on the Pay button.

After making the payment, the system that manages the ETA will automatically send you a confirmation number (Confirmation Code), which you will need to check the status of your application. To check, go to the Check Status page on the home page.

Usually the confirmation code arrives after a few minutes.
While the actual confirmation of the electronic authorization to enter the country will arrive approximately 24/48 hours after completion of the application. Everything will arrive via email.

METHOD 2 – Visa request via online visa agency

If you don’t speak English or don’t feel confident in following the different steps, to obtain the visa peacefully and without anxiety I recommend you rely on a online visa agency who will make the request for you for a small extra commission.

The forms to fill out are clear and in Italian, you don’t waste more than 5 minutes, the payment methods are secure and, what is no small thing, they are serious in managing procedures.

Services like this simplify application processes that can sometimes be cumbersome, like this one or the one for India.

The site also allows you to start a procedure Urgent Visa in the event that departure occurs within the next 72 hours.
Just tick “urgent” on the visa request form and the application will run on preferential lanes!

One important thing I would like to point out to you is that your visa is valid for 30 days from the moment of arrival in the country, while the electronic authorization is valid for 3 months from the time of requestthis means that your 30 days of stay must fall within 3 months.

So don’t be too hasty in requesting it, I recommend you do it about 1 month before. It is also advisable to keep a copy of the ETA approval and show it at the point of entry into Sri Lanka.
