Hogmanay: what it’s all about
It seems that it is a very ancient tradition, that of Hogmanay, which is still followed today welcome the new year in Scotland. Whoever decides to celebrate New Year’s Eve like this will have to follow a few small rules. Among many, that of clean house, an activity which, obviously, has the aim of leaving the past behind and starting the new year in the right spirit. Very famous, then, is that of first-footing which provides that the first person to cross the threshold of their home at the stroke of New Year’s Eve must be male, tall and with brown hair. Obviously you won’t have to be empty-handed but bring with you a bottle of whiskey and some other gifts. The first thing that will be done? Toast the new year with a little distillate.
Another interesting tradition is that according to which the first day of the year is good no objects are taken out of the houseat least until a new one is brought.
Edinburgh, where to experience Hogmanay
To fully experience the spirit of Hogmanay it is worth flying to Edinburgh, the beautiful capital of Scotland. Here they are scheduled various events to welcome the new year with the right predisposition.
For example, on the evening of December 29th a torchlight procession is held in the historic center of the city, which also has a charitable purpose. Starting at 6pm, the route will start at 7.30pm and end around 9pm. On the 30th, however, there will be room for Night Afore Disco Party under Edinburgh Castle.
Street artists, music, food and drinks: on the evening of the 31st the appointment is with Hogmanay Street Party: several areas are planned, including one dedicated to Silent Disco. Furthermore, there will be a concert by Pulp, a famous British band.
Appointments for adults and children, to experience the anticipation and the beginning of the year in a special and unique way, flying to suggestive places like only Scotland and Edinburgh can be.
There are, then, several stops to include in a travel itinerary if you visit this city.
