Kashid Beach-Under the Glorious Sun

Lonavala, Khandala, Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar, some popular weekend getaways from Pune, are over. So where do Puneites go for a weekend getaway? We decided to take the lead and discover for ourselves – my eight friends and I – our own version of a city escape. At 170 km and under a four-hour drive, with a coastline of three kilometers Kashid sounded like our kind of place under the sun.

We packed our bags and left early in the morning to have so much of the never ending waves of the Arabian Sea and the glorious warmth of the sun. When we reached Kashid the sky was clear and there was no threat of high tide and the water sports were in full swing. Aside from just lying on the sand and soaking up the sun with a chilled drink in your hand, water sports are the main attraction of this place.

Kashid is not exactly on the tourist ‘must see’ list, so rates and costs of water sports seemed surprisingly high to us. But a good bargain never hurt anyone and we try our best to get a good seat for ourselves and get a bargain on all three water sports – the water scooter, banana boat and tube for about INR 400 per person.

Kashid is a beautiful amalgamation of some of nature’s most wonderful gifts. From rice paddies, blue seas, white sand, green mountains, to flowing streams and lakes, it has it all. There are several historically and architecturally rich places in Kashid. Murud-Janjira Fort is located on an oval-shaped rock off the coast of the Arabian Sea near the port city of Murud and is considered one of the strongest naval bridges in India. The fort is approached by sailing boats from the Rajapuri jetty. Built in 1885, the Nawab Palace, also known as Ahmedganj Palace, showcases Gothic and Mughal architectural styles. It has a beautiful mosque and tombs in its premises. But apart from the shacks on the beach selling omelette sandwich, maggi, egg bhurji and the like, and the restaurant in your hotel, Kashid does not offer eating joints. Before we knew it, we were on our way back to Pune. But every minute of our time spent in Kashid was beautifully captured by our camera lens, which is what we will always cherish.
