Mayan ruins Chichen Itza in Yucatan Mexico

Chichen Itza it is one of the six most important archaeological sites of the Mayan culture in Yucata and is considered one of the 7 wonders of the world, its monuments, especially those in the north including the Temple of Kukulkan, the Temple of the Warriors and El Castillo are an excellent example of MesoAmerican architecture which can still be admired today thanks to the beautiful decorated sculptures.

Chichen Itza spans 300 hectares and is one of the largest archaeological sites in Mexico.

This sacred site was one of the largest centers of the Yucatan peninsula and one of the most evocative thanks to the numerous engraved stones that describe their vision of the world and the universe.

In Chichen Iza numerous classic Mayan construction techniques merge with some new ones that make this Mayan site one of the most important testimonies of the Mayan-Toltec civilization in Yucatan.

Chichen Itza is located halfway between Cancun and Merida but you can also reach it from Tulum by bus, a 3 and a half hour journey (130 pesos one way, 260 return).

Entrance to the ruins costs 116 pesos per person, if you want a guide this costs 500 pesos if in Spanish or 600 pesos if English. Guides are also available in other languages.

The park opens at 9.30am and closes at 6pm.

The bus company from Tulum it is the ADO and has buses going to Chichen Itza at 9 in the morning and at 12, the return is at 4.30 in the afternoon. The ticket costs 136pesos one way (about 9 euros)

The bus from Cancun costs 140 pesos, 3 hours travel in first class or less in second class but takes 4 and a half hours.

From Merida, however, buses take only 2 hours and cost between $5 and $7.
