The Incredible Story of Nek Chand’s Rock Garden

They say, “All things are hard before they are easy”; but some people look beyond what’s hard and what’s easy, they just believe in hard work. Today we are going to pay tribute to such a man, who has done an enormous amount of work.

The creator of the world famous Rock Garden of Chandigarh, Nek Chand passed away on June 12, 2015. After celebrating 90 birthdays with us, this legendary man left the world in an unforgettable way. Here’s what you need to know about his journey:

  1. Born in a village which is now in Pakistan, Nek Chand’s date of birth is December 15, 1924.

  2. In India’s first planned city under the direction of Swiss/French architect Le Corbusier, Nek Chand took responsibility of the Public Works Department in 1951 and worked there as an inspector.

  3. A virtuoso, Chand began collecting rubbish and discarded items in and around the city in his spare time.

  4. He started recycling the material with his own vision, picking it from a canyon in a nearby forest, outside the city.

  5. Chand also managed to hide his work for 18 years, until it was discovered by authorities in 1975.

  6. He used cement and sand mix along with waste materials such as broken glass, bracelets, pottery and ironwork to create this 40 acre (initially 18) garden space.

  7. In the year 1984, he was awarded Padma Shri for his phenomenal work.

  8. On average, 5,000 people visit the garden daily, with an annual revenue of INR 1.8 crore.

The entire garden is built from industrial waste and discarded items. It is near Sukhna Lake. The Rock Garden of Chandigarh is unique in the world and hence draws the colossal crowd till date. He is a man known for his perseverance, hard work and advanced skills. The main highlight of his work remains that he was self-taught and his work became a model for the world.
