Where to stay in Johannesburg: best areas and hotels

With a larger urban area of over 1,000 square kilometers, Johannesburg is South Africa’s largest city and the continent’s financial hub. It’s definitely a huge place and with attractions and accommodation quite spread out, traveling here can feel intimidating at first. The city center is home to many top attractions, such as the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill, but it hasn’t historically been the safest area and downtown accommodations are still limited. Most tourist hotels and guest houses, in all price ranges, are located in the Northern Suburbs, which are split into multiple neighborhoods – such as Sandton , Rosebank , Melville ,Melrose , and Norwood . Each is home to its own shopping center (where much of the city’s food scene takes place), as well as some restaurants and shopping districts. South of the city center is the township of Soweto, where the anti-apartheid student uprisings of 1976 began, and most travelers visit on a half-day tour, though there are a burgeoning number of family-run hotels here.
