A good news for all adventurers and mountain lovers, the fascinating Nelong Valley is now open to the public. Located 45 km from the Indo-China border, this valley was closed to the public after the 1962 Sino-Indian War. After more than half a century, citizens have the opportunity to witness the beauty of this mountain desert. Located at an altitude of over 11,000 ft above sea level, this valley offers mountain desert topography. This picturesque valley is part of the Gangotri National Park and is home to endangered animals such as the snow leopard, musk deer and blue sheep. The picturesque view of the Tibetan plateau here will surely enchant you.

To travel
Nelong Valley is located at a distance of about 315 km from the city of Dehradun. Reach Bhairavghati which is about 100 km from Uttarkashi and then drive 25 km to reach the valley. Private vehicles are not allowed here so you have to take a vehicle from the forest department.
Entrance
Only six forest department vehicles are allowed in a day carrying four persons each. As the government tries to promote tourism in the valley, this may change in the coming days. Before entering, you must take a permit from the sub-divisional magistrate. A fitness certificate is also required to enter the valley. Due to its strategic location, entry of foreigners is not allowed into the valley.
To stay
Since overnight stays are not allowed in the valley, you have to find accommodation in Bhairavghati. Many cheap hotels are located here, where you can enjoy a comfortable stay. Garwal Mandal Vikash Nigam is a semi-government guest house that offers a comfortable stay to its guests.
What should you pack?
When packing for a visit to this exotic destination, don’t forget to pack your woolens and sneakers. Also bring a power bank, a map, sunglasses, sunblock and a first aid kit. Pack your bags like a pro so you have everything you need for the trip.
Season
The only time you can visit Nelong Valley is from May to November. It remains closed in the winter months.
