“A serene hill that erupts once a year in a dizzying volcanic eruption.” Perhaps this line best describes Mysore Dussehra as this otherwise serene city turns into a frenzy of celebrations during Dussehra. Known here as Dasara, it is Karnataka’s state festival and has been celebrating this festival for over 400 years. In fact, the Mysore Dasara celebrations started in the 15th century by the Vijayanagar kings .
Enough history? Well, here’s a look at some of the most gala Dussehra events Mysore is known for.
The Royal Durbar
It’s a blast from the past. The tradition of holding a special durbar at Mysore Palace started during Krishnaraja Wodeyar III’s reign back in 1805. To this day, the current symbolic king holds court during Dussehra. The king dresses in traditional clothing and ascends the throne, which is followed by performances by court musicians. However, the palace celebrations are private in nature and open only to a select elite audience.

Relief of Mysore Palace
Gedurende de 10 dagen van Mysore Dasara wordt het paleis van Mysore briljant verlicht door de gloed van bijna 1 lakh-lampen ‘s nachts. Het terrein voor het paleis komt tot leven met geladen culturele voorstellingen waaronder dans- en muziekshows. Artiesten uit verschillende staten betoveren het publiek met hun prestaties. Dit is een weelderige gelegenheid en het onderhoud van de verlichting alleen al kost een kolossale som van bijna INR 1 crore.

Jamboo Savari
Op de vooravond van Vijayadashami, de straten van Mysore dragen een feestelijke uitstraling wanneer het kleurrijk is Jumboo Savari begint bij Mysore Palace en culmineert in de Bannimantap waar de Banni-boom (Prosopis spicigera) wordt aanbeden. Deze kleurrijke processie wordt geleid door prachtig versierde koninklijke olifanten, samen met kamelen en paarden. Het belangrijkste hoogtepunt van de Jamboo Savari is een olifant met een enorm idool van godin Chamundeshwari in een gouden howdah. De stemming is uitbundig met de State Police Band die stevige muziek speelt en volksdansers die waanzinnige optredens opvoeren.

Tentoonstelling
The Doddakere Maidan opposite Mysore Palace is the venue for this mega event. On the eve of Dasara, the exhibition offers non-stop entertainment for two whole months. It is an extravaganza of food, shopping and fun attractions that witness the participation of numerous corporate and industrial houses.
