Traveling alone is both fun and adventurous. Whether you’re meeting new people, exploring unseen places, or being your own guide, you can master the art of solo travel by keeping a few basic things in mind before you embark on your excursion.
Light pack
Since you don’t have anyone to keep an eye on your luggage, it’s best to pack and travel light. Try to limit yourself to a knapsack and a trolley case. Lock your stuff properly too. Keep your credit cards and cash separate from other belongings.
Choose the right destination
As a solo traveler, make sure you choose the right destination. Research and determine the places you want to explore and select the one where you can see different places and what you can do. This will ensure that you never get bored.

Do your research
Before embarking on a solo adventure, read up on your destination. Store maps and directions on your phone so you don’t have to rely on people to get from one place to another. If you have special dietary requirements, for example if you are vegan or vegetarian, you should know in advance where you can get a meal of your choice.
Book the right accommodation
Since you are traveling alone, you can choose a hostel, homestay, B&B or a budget hotel to save on expenses. You pay per bed and not per room if you choose a hostel. International hostels are generally reliable, safe and clean, and open to travelers of all ages.
“Must-have” -documenten
Always take all your important documents with you on a trip, be it your travel insurance number or ID. Also don’t forget to scan and save a copy on your phone. In case you have an allergy or a certain medical condition, it is a good idea to write it down on a metal bracelet and wear it at all times. In case you encounter a medical emergency, the doctors and nurses will know how to treat you.
Only on the road at night
It is always best to inform your hotel, friends and relatives about your whereabouts. Make arrangements for transportation, especially if you are traveling far. Check with the locals whether your hotel or the place you are going to is safe or not. Wear properly and avoid carrying too much money. Never leave your drink unattended in a bar.
The local language can be of great help
No one asks you to learn another language, but learn basic greetings and jargons that can come in handy when stuck in a traffic jam. You can also install a local language translation app on your phone.
Stay in touch with friends and family
Don’t forget to periodically message, call or email your near and dear ones as you explore your desired stopover. Staying in touch will not only help you stay safe, but also lift your spirits when you’re feeling down.
Be confident and don’t act like a tourist
Avoid standing on a street corner with a huge guidebook or map in hand. The key is to look and stay confident. If you need to consult a map, always go to a store or doorway.
Don’t plan too much for one day
Take a stroll through winding streets or have a coffee in a cafe instead of wrapping yourself up with an exhaustive list of ‘things-to-do’. This way you get some time to think about your experiences.
