Kamalaya Koh Samui

The Kamalaya Koh Samui: the most beautiful wellness retreat in Thailand

You beautiful Thailand, how much I was looking forward to seeing you again! It’s been many, many years since I dug my toes into the buttery, warm sands of Thailand’s dreamy beaches. Feeling the fruity-sweet taste of ripe exotic fruits on the tongue, the long walks through the lively night markets and having my muscles really relaxed with a traditional Thai massage – I really missed all that. I am so happy that I can finally be here again. On Koh Samui in the great Kamalaya Resort, a wonderful oasis of calm, well-being and health in the midst of the tropical nature of Thailand’s islands.

In this post, let me show you why Kamalaya Koh Samui is the perfect place to bring body, mind and soul back into harmony and to recharge the batteries that have been drained from everyday life!

Health & Wellness at Kamalaya Koh Samui

Once a year I would like to take intensive care of my health as part of a cure, which I set myself as a goal some time ago. For example, last year I visited the renowned Barberyn Beach Ayurveda Resort in Sri Lanka to detoxify and cleanse my body according to the principles of Indian health science. The focus of the Kamalaya Koh Samui is not on classic Ayurveda, but on the different wellness and health packages that you can book for a certain period of time.

The various packages are divided into four groups: healthy lifestyle, detoxification & restart, stress management & help with burnout, and care for the life energy of the heart, body and mind. Based on your personal wellness goals, you choose the right program for you. For me, this time it’s the “Comprehensive Detox”. But first, let me tell you a little bit about the many temptations of the resort before we go into detail about the different health treatments later, ok?

The entire concept of the resort, the healthy food and, above all, the wonderfully natural design are based on the desire to always exude harmony, vitality and well-being in all areas. Even the name Kamalaya reflects this philosophy, because in the ancient language Sanskrit the words Kamal mean “Lotus” and Alaya “Realm”. Beautiful or!?

I particularly like the ancient cave that used to be used by Buddhist monks to meditate. Today numerous candles flicker around an enchantingly decorated altar. The heart of Kamalaya Koh Samui – a magical retreat of reflection and meditation for all resort guests.

The Rooms, Suites & Villas at Kamalaya Koh Samui

A place to feel at home – this is how the Kamalaya website describes the resort’s various rooms, suites and villas. But this sentence doesn’t even come close to doing justice to the living dreams that have come true, because in my Sea View Villa I not only feel just as comfortable as at home, but actually much better. The design and furnishings of the rooms score with an elegant style, lots of wood and stone, soothing colors and beautiful fabrics. Do you also love open bathrooms, where you can look at the sky while taking an evening shower and listen to the concert of cicadas?

Yoga mats are available in every villa so that you can do something good for your body at any time. It is wonderful to practice on the large terrace with sea views and the chirping of birds!

When designing the resort, great importance was also attached to ensuring that the individual buildings fit almost perfectly into the surrounding nature. Between gurgling streams, under palm trees swaying in the wind and next to the imposing granite rocks, which give the entire island its special atmosphere and remind me a lot of La Digue in the Seychelles, the houses and villas are hidden in the dense greenery along a slope. Due to this special location, you can enjoy a wonderful view from almost all areas of Kamalaya to the Gulf of Thailand glittering in the sun and the offshore islands – simply a dream!

So at least once during your stay, make yourself really comfortable on your balcony or terrace with a good book in your hand, sip on a freshly brewed herbal tea and snack on the ripe fruit that is ready for you every day in your villa!

Relaxing hours on the private beach or by the pool

At the foot of Kamalaya Koh Samui stretches a picturesque little beach that is reserved exclusively for guests of the resort. On both sides it is of course bordered by the distinctive rounded rocks. Make yourself comfortable on one of the sun loungers and enjoy the great view of the shimmering bay at your feet. If you prefer to be active, you can rent one of the free stand-up paddleboards or a kayak, for example, and explore the coast from the water. Snorkeling or just splashing around in the shallow water is of course also an option.

As it is often the case on the south side of Koh Samui that there is low tide during the day, it is just perfect that here at Kamalaya you have two swimming pools to choose from in addition to the beach. The 25 meter long lap pool invites you to do so, and with a great view. The leisure pool, on the other hand, is intended more for relaxation and enjoyment, forming a picturesque ensemble together with the lotus pond. Observing the busy fish inside is almost meditative.

The special kitchen at Kamalaya Koh Samui

Healthy food made from the highest quality ingredients is very important at Kamalaya and forms one of the pillars of the holistic health concept. The belief that the food we eat every day is the basis for our mental and physical health is reflected in every meal served.

Inspired by both traditional Chinese medicine and Indian health teachings, combined with the latest medical research, a colorful rainbow of valuable vitamins and vital substances is presented to you on every plate. Packaged in a delicious and colorful health menu, of course, which contains elements from both the Far East and our European cuisine.

The day at Kamalaya Koh Samui starts relaxed with a delicious breakfast in the beautiful SOMA restaurant. On two levels, it is completely open with lots of wood and completes the delicious food with beautiful views over the coast of Koh Samui. Dinner is also served here, with a warm glow from indirect lighting and the sounds of the jungle all around.

Above the SOMA, the ALCHEMY Tea Lounge lures with what is probably the best spot in the entire resort for watching the sunset. You will have your lunch in the AMRITA Café, accompanied by the splashing of the water in the lotus pond and with an equally great view, this time of the beach area.

The award-winning wellness and health oasis of Kamalaya Koh Samui

At Kamalaya Koh Samui, a large and very professional team consisting of doctors, therapists, healers, fitness experts and lifestyle coaches from different countries around the world takes care of your health. Each of them brings their own expertise from their culture to the team, which makes the applications in Kamalaya so incredibly valuable.

On this page you will find a very useful overview of who is currently on site and actively practicing during your visit. This can be very helpful if you are particularly interested in a particular topic. Because not all healers, doctors & co. are in the resort all year round. If you would like to attend a real retreat, you will find all the information you need on the homepage under Wellness Programs.

My tip: If you book a stay at Kamalaya for at least five nights including one of the wellness programs, you will receive either a 60-minute vital essence oil massage or a 60-minute traditional Thai massage for free with the code BRAND5 !

By the way, you can also enjoy a number of different wellness facilities at Kamalaya without booking one of the comprehensive health packages. The Leela & Om steam grottos, the beautifully located, hot and cold plunge pools with the great view, the extensively equipped Padma & Shakti fitness rooms, in which a wide variety of free courses (e.g. very intensive Pilates) are offered daily, as well as Hilltop Yoga Pavilion for practicing yoga and the smaller Prana Sala for yoga or meditation are open to all guests. In addition, a wellness introductory meeting and a body bio impedance analysis are always included in the room price.

As a guest at Kamalaya, whether you have booked a health package or not, you can take part in a wide variety of holistic activities every day. You can choose from various yoga classes with different focuses, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, as well as great guided meditations in the morning and in the evening. I particularly liked the Sound Healing Meditation.

In addition, various health lectures on very exciting topics take place every day from 12 to 1 p.m. Some are more practically oriented (integrate positive habits into everyday life), some have a spiritual touch, such as the introduction to astrology.

I can highly recommend the ceremonial tea sharing with the charismatic San Bao in the ALCHEMY Tea Lounge, where you not only try the delicious Oolong tea from the highlands of China, but also lots of interesting information about its origin, the traditional preparation and of course the experience healing effects on our body. Incidentally, San Bao also leads the Qi Gong lessons.

Comprehensive Detox im Kamalaya Koh Samui

After much deliberation, I decided on the Comprehensive Detox program because I have been very interested and concerned with the topic of detoxifying the body for years. Through the air we breathe, through what we eat and drink every day and through our environment, our body is constantly absorbing toxins that, in the worst case, are deposited in our skin and organs.

You can certainly imagine that this cannot be good in the long run. It is therefore very important that we support our body at regular intervals in releasing and excreting precisely these toxins. I was able to experience a wide variety of treatments (in addition to the already mentioned body bio impedance analysis and the wellness introductory talk) as part of my package:

Chi Nei Tsang

Don’t worry, I heard the words Chi Nei Tsang for the first time here too. This treatment technique is a Taoist abdominal massage that is intended to help against many discomforts in the abdomen and intestines, such as classic abdominal pain, poor digestion, flatulence and the like. The Taoist monks in China who practice this intense organ massage see the gut as the body’s second brain. With the treatment, blockages in the internal organs are to be recognized and resolved, and the Chi life energy is to be brought back into balance.

Various massages & lymphatic drainage

The Vital Essence Oil Massage, a traditional Thai massage and professional lymphatic drainage are also part of the comprehensive detox package. The oil massage is a dream of well-being and relaxation, while the Thai massage stretches and loosens the muscles wonderfully. Lymphatic drainage, on the other hand, has less to do with a classic massage: With targeted, very gentle stroking and pulling movements along the lymph channels, the therapist supports the body in removing the accumulated lymph fluid more quickly.

Oriental Herbal Detoxifying Body Scrub & Wrap

This treatment is a real treat for your skin! After the circulation of your largest organ has been stimulated with a gentle peeling based on healing herbs, the body wrap follows. You will be wrapped in warm towels together with various medicinal plants and white mud from Thailand. A combination of warmth and tranquility form the optimal basis for the intensive effects of the ingredients. The mud ensures a clear and radiant complexion, while the herbs promote detoxification through the skin.

A traditional Asian foot massage

Forgive me, but when I think of Thailand, the great foot massages that you can book here on every corner in the small salons always come to mind. During my first trip to Thailand this was actually one of my favorite things to do between and after exploring the many great Bangkok sights.

But of course these cannot be compared to a foot massage at Kamalaya. Here the therapists are perfectly trained and of course the environment is worlds more relaxed and beautiful. While your feet are resting in a hot foot bath with salt, herbs and flowers, there is first a pleasant hand and arm massage and finally the heavenly foot massage, in which the various acupressure points on the feet are stimulated.

Infrared sauna

In total, I was allowed to visit the infrared sauna six times for 30 minutes each. With the not too hot 42 – 45 degrees air temperature you can bear it well, while the targeted heat gives the body a lot of positive things. Among other things, blood circulation is promoted and the skin is supported in eliminating stored toxins. Not to forget that the muscles relax wonderfully in the heat!

Colon Hydrotherapy

This type of therapy is used to cleanse the entire intestine of all old contamination. So practically from year-old leftovers and other waste products that somehow didn’t make it out of you, but are still stuck in the intestinal sacs. Colon hydrotherapy is almost always an important part of a good detox and even Ayurveda uses enemas a lot. Constant tiredness, headaches, poor digestion or a sluggish metabolism – such symptoms can indicate that the intestine is longing for a comprehensive cleansing.

A detailed overview of all treatments that can be booked, including detailed explanations of the methods, can be found here . Very good to know: If you don’t like a certain treatment from your favorite package, you can exchange it for another one under certain circumstances. You can easily address all customization requests in your on-site wellness introductory meeting, that’s no problem at all!

Recently, the particularly intensive treatments at Longevity House, such as ozone therapy or direct blood infusions with various vital substances, were integrated into the different packages, which unfortunately was not the case during my stay. Nevertheless, I was allowed to try the CLEANSE & PURIFY Drip with a detoxifying mix of vitamin B12 and selected antioxidants, as well as the hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and was absolutely thrilled. With the latter, you rest for an hour in a small tank that increases the ambient pressure while breathing medically pure oxygen, with all sorts of health benefits.

Discover the diversity & beauty of Koh Samui

If you would like to discover a little more of the beauty of Koh Samui’s many sights during your stay at Kamalaya, then this is perfectly possible as part of a temple tour, a sunset cruise or an island tour that takes you to the impressive Namuang waterfall, the famous mummified monk in Wat Khunaram, whimsical Grandfather and Grandmother Rock, the beautiful Big Buddha Temple and bustling Fisherman’s Village in Bophut.

Incidentally, as part of the Sunset Cruise, you will also make a stop at the small island of Koh Madsum, where many cute little pigs romp right on the beach!

By the way, the perfect end to your time at Kamalaya is a visit to the beautiful pop-up restaurant LUNA by Clara, which blends magically into nature directly behind the beach. With an aperitif in hand, first calmly watch the sunset from the comfortable sofas and then enjoy the exquisite menu in this very special setting, while reminiscing about all the unforgettable experiences of your trip!
