Where to sleep in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is a tourist town 1 hour from Cancun and 45 minutes from Tulum.

Playa del Carmen was initially a fishing village but over the years and the increase in tourism it has become a center where many tourists flock 12 months a year to spend their holidays or it is used as a base to then move around the Yucatan peninsula. All travelers to the Yucatan spend a few days here sooner or later.

Thanks to tourism which does not experience seasonal lows, or rather yes but even in low seasons there are always many people, Playa del Carmen offers numerous accommodation options.

Costs are a little higher than other cities and start from 120 pesos per night for a dormitory room in hostels.

I stayed at the hostel Live your life two blocks from the ocean and 3 blocks from the ferry station to the island of Cozumel.

The hostel appears to be new, large kitchen with 6 separate burners so that 3 people can cook at the same time, large fridge where there is always room for everyone’s food, clean and large separate men’s and women’s bathrooms.

The first night is expensive 140 pesos from the second one it drops to 120 (€8).

They say there is breakfast included but in reality it is quite poor, two slices of bread with butter and jam, if you like hearty breakfasts it is better to buy something else at the nearby hypermarket where you will find everything you need.

At the hostel there is wifi free and a computer to use, flat screen television with sky, a small swimming pool with hydromassage.

It seemed like the cheapest and most comfortable option to me.

Only 5 minutes to get to the center (5th Ave) and close to typical and cheap restaurants and supermarkets and to the ADO bus station and collective buses to go to Cancun or Tulum. The hostel is located on calle 2 where it intersects with calle 20 and 25…very easy to find considering that the city is divided into blocks.

I’ve also heard great things about the hostel White Elephant which however costs a little more, just over €10.
